How Your Air Conditioning Works

Your Air Conditioning system consists of some basic parts, such as a compressor, evaporator, condenser, and a metering device. While different manufacturers may use different methods of controlling the system, they all use the same basic components.

The A/C in your vehicle works by changing the state of your refrigerant from a gas to a liquid and back again. As the refrigerant changes state, it absorbs heat and humidity from the vehicle and allows the system to give off cool, dry air.

FREQUENTLY ASKED AIR CONDITIONING AND HEATING QUESTIONS

Why is there a moldy smell when I turn my air conditioning on?

If the drainage mechanism is plugged and water builds up in your system, bacteria can grow causing a musty or mouldy odour. There are products and procedures we have available to remedy this problem.

Why is my A/C not blowing cold air?

One possible issue could be that the air conditioning system could be low on refrigerant. This would typically indicate a leak and would need to be repaired before the A/C system could be recharged.

Another possible diagnosis could be a restriction of air flow through the evaporator. A clogged cabin air filter will cause this issue.

Why is there a puddle of water under my car?

When your A/C is on and the evaporator gets cold, it condenses moisture out of the air. This is why you may sometimes see a puddle of water under your car while the A/C is running.

When I turn my heat on high, why isn’t there any air coming out?

A restriction of air flow can cause low air pressure. This is normally caused by a clogged cabin air filter.
